Brewers???

Anonymous source says the Brewers and Trevor Hoffman are close to a deal. San Diego apparently pulled their $4 million dollar offer earlier in the offseason forcing Hoffman to file for free agency. 4 million???? We pay Eric Gagne $10 mil to look "threatening" in the bullpen, but a guy who consistently saves 30+ games every year is getting half of that? Needless to say, if we can get Hoffman for 1-2 years at 5ish million/year I'll take it. Our bullpen was a wreck for much of last year and looks as bad if not worse with Torres retiring and Shouse going elsewhere. So while the additions of Jorge Julio and Hoffman are not Francisco Rodriguez-esque, I think they're good moves and at a bargain price. I mean what other options are there? Thoughts???

I love the move! Kind of like Gagne for less money...it can't hurt. Get a starting pitcher...ahem Sheets and we are all good for next year. I can't wait for opening day against the Scrubs when Hells Bells is played by VaJayJay and Hoffmann strikes out the side for the save.

Sign him up. Haudricourt said in one of his posts that the Crew isn't as concerned about Hoffman's age b/c he's a change-up specialist. Hard to argue that, though, how much has he been protected by Petco Park. Too lazy to look up his home/road splits.

Splits were actually better on the road last year:

HOME
16 saves, 4.25 ERA, 7 HR, .207 BAA

AWAY
14 saves, 2.87 ERA, 1 HR, .254 BAA

wow, I'm really surprised by that Rubes. I don't know as much about baseball as others on this board, but those stats seem really out of whack, particularly the BAA.

They are a bit out of whack, compared to his career numbers:

CAREER

HOME
285 saves, 2.52 ERA, 43 HR, .203 BAA

AWAY
269 saves, 3.09 ERA, 47 HR, .217 BAA

The BAA number was that one that correlated to your belief about Petco: opponents hit 50 points higher when Hoffman was on the road vs. at home.

I agree Zone....get Sheets. Gagne's money is off the books, Turnblow's money is off the books, and it looks like we are getting Hoffman on the cheap so I think we can spend a little money. What about Smoltz?....as a starter? What kind of deal is he looking for? I think Smoltz would be a nice veteran to add with Hoffman....depending on the price of course. They two of them would be nice leaders for Villanueva, Parra, and Gallardo.

I would expect the opposite Rubes. I'm not super familiar with the outfield layout at Petco but the larger outfield at Petco could/should lead to more hits, propping up the BAA. I know that's the way it is at Coors. But 7 homeruns at home vs. 1 on the road? That's crazy.

Smoltz is probably going to sign with the Red Sox. Wants a last chance at the Series, and so on.

DO NOT SIGN BEN SHEETS. A guy on the wrong side of 30 who's injury prone and has never been thrilled about keeping himself in shape? Yeah, I'll pass.

Hoffman deal is done according to the Prince of Darkness, Haudricourt.

Agree on Smoltz & Sheets.

I'm pumped. We were quickly running out of options on the closer front and to bring in a well-known veteran is a huge coup. And, agreed if the price tag is significantly less than Gagne (as reported) it's a good deal.

I'd still take Sheets on a 1-year deal at the right price. He's our Kerry Wood and owes us 1 solid year.

I'm surprised we got Hoffman for one year/$6 mil. Another $1.5 mil with incentives. I thought he was dead set on a 2-year deal. I guess he couldn't get anything else. Understandable for an over 40 guy. I love that we got him... well as long as he passes a physical.

Hells Bells will blast from the crappy speakers at Miller Park. I hope he doesn't change his song.

I hope he comes in to the Beer Barrel Polka.
